英語面接で、志望動機を確認するためによく聞かれる質問の一つが、

• 〇 Why are you interested in this position?
• 〇 What interests you about this role?
• 〇 Why does this position appeal to you?

 

「なぜこの職種・ポジションに興味があるのですか？」

という質問です。

この質問を聞かれると、

「会社への志望動機を話せばいい？」

「自分の経験を説明すればいい？」

「キャリアアップしたい、と答えてもいい？」

と迷う方も多いと思います。

この質問で面接官が知りたいのは、単に「この仕事をやってみたい」という気持ちではありません。

大切なのは、

仕事内容を理解したうえで何に興味を持ち、それが自分の経験・強みとどうつながり、このポジションで何を実現したいのか。

つまり、あなたの

• 〇 Role Understanding（職務理解）
• 〇 Fit（適合性）・Motivation（志望意欲）
• 〇 Future Direction（今後の方向性）

 

が見られています。

今回は、英語面接で Why are you interested in this position? と聞かれたときの回答の作り方と、20〜30秒程度で答えられるシンプルな英語例をご紹介します。

面接官が見ているポイント

この質問では、面接官は主に次の点を確認しています。

の3ステップです。

の流れにすると、「興味があります」という志望理由を、仕事内容を理解したうえでの具体的なキャリア選択として伝えることができます。

まずは短く答える｜約30秒の英語回答例

まずは、伝えたいポイントを30秒程度にまとめた回答例を見てみましょう。

実際の面接では、質問の内容や面接官から求められる具体性によって、30〜60秒程度、Behavioral Questionでは60〜90秒程度話すこともあります。ここでは、回答の基本となるポイントを短くまとめています。

面接官が高く評価するポイント

① 「仕事内容の何に興味があるか」が具体的

• 〇 It looks interesting.
• 〇 It seems challenging.

だけでは、どの会社・職種にも使えてしまいます。

Job Descriptionを確認して、責任範囲・ミッション・取り組む課題などから、自分が本当に興味を持ったポイントを選びましょう。

② 自分の経験とのMatchがある

興味だけでなく、

• 〇 That matches my experience in…
• 〇 That fits well with my background in…

と、自分の経験につなげることで、「やってみたい仕事」から**「経験を活かせる仕事」**になります。

③ Futureまで伝えている

過去の経験だけで終わらず、

と、このポジションで何をしたいのかまで伝えると、入社後の姿が見えやすくなります。

④ キャリアの流れに一貫性がある

良い回答には、

これまでの経験 → 今回のポジション → 次に取り組みたいこと

という自然なつながりがあります。

「なぜ今、このポジションなのか」が伝わることも重要です。

NG① 「面白そうだから」

悪い回答ではありませんが、具体性がありません。

例えば、

I’m particularly interested in the opportunity to lead cross-functional projects because that closely matches my current experience.

のように、何に興味があるのかまで具体的にしましょう。

NG② 自分が得られるメリットだけを話す

I’m interested in this position because it would be a great opportunity for me to develop my skills and advance my career.

成長意欲は大切ですが、「自分が何を得られるか」だけになっています。

自分の成長＋その経験をどう仕事に活かすかまで伝えると、よりバランスが良くなります。

NG③ 会社の魅力だけを話す

I’m interested in this position because your company is global, innovative, and very successful.

これは、

What attracted you to our company?

への回答に近くなっています。

Why are you interested in this position? では、会社ではなく、仕事内容・責任・役割を中心にしましょう。

前者の中心は、

Role：なぜ、この仕事なのか？

後者の中心は、

です。

両方を聞かれる可能性があるため、同じ回答を準備するのではなく、RoleとCompanyそれぞれに理由を準備しておくことをおすすめします。

という回答です。

もちろん、どれも間違いではありません。

でも、面接官として私がさらに聞きたいのは、

「では、この仕事の何に興味を持ったのですか？」

ということです。

例えば、

I’m interested in this position because it involves global projects.

だけではなく、

I’m particularly interested in the opportunity to lead projects across different countries.

さらに、

That fits well with my experience coordinating international teams.

まで伝えれば、志望理由がかなり具体的になります。

難しい英語を使う必要はありません。

• 〇 What interests me most is…

このようなシンプルな表現で十分に強いアピールになります。

私が面接官として特に注目するのは、

「この仕事をやってみたい人」ではなく、「この仕事を理解し、自分との接点を説明できる人」

です。

そのためにも、

Interest → Match → Future

で整理してみてください。

何に興味があるのか → なぜ自分に合うのか → この仕事で何をしたいのか

まで伝えることで、「興味があります」という言葉を、面接官が納得できる志望動機に変えることができます。

重要なのは、
