FAMILIAR

Definition: (adjective) Frequently heard, seen or experienced.

定義・意味:（形容詞）よく聞いたり・見たりすることで、その事や人を知っていると思うこと。

For example: 　例えば：

Who is he? He looks so familiar.

あれ誰？彼のことどっかで見たことあるな。

This place looks familiar. Perhaps I’ve been here before.

あれっ、ここ知ってるな。たぶん前に来たことあるよ。

You look familiar. Have we met before?

会ったことあるな。前にどこかで会ってない？

FAMILIAR WITH

Definition: (adjective) having knowledge about something, someone.

定義・意味:（形容詞）その人・事について自分の知識として持っていること。

For example: 　例えば：

I’m not very familiar with that area of Tokyo. (Meaning: I don’t know that area of Tokyo.)

東京のそのあたりは良く知らないんだよね。

We are familiar with the situation. (Meaning: We know about the situation.)

その状況を良く知っている。その状況への対応の仕方を良く知っている。

A: Will your dog jump on me?

A:　その犬飛びかかってこない？

B: No, he is already familiar with you.

B:　大丈夫だよ、君の事よく知ってるじゃない。

A: Are you familiar with New York restaurants? I’m travelling there next week.

A:　ニューヨークのレストランとか良く知ってる？来週行くんだけど。

B: Yes, I’m quite familiar because I lived there for 5 years.

B:　良く知ってるよ。５年ぐらい住んでたからね。
